D., February 15, 2014: I filled your feeder with one suet cake and hung it in a pear tree outside my window yesterday afternoon. By the time I finished my outdoor chores (filling feeders, birdbath, shoveling snow) and came inside an hour later, there was a Downy woodpecker eating from the feeder. A little later, there was a Northern flicker who clung to the feeder for 10 minutes eating suet. I hung your feeder in the same location as my upside-down suet feeder (which the starlings could cling to and eat) and removed it. Several Downy woodpeckers and the flicker have visited the feeder several times today. (We got 5 inches of snow beginning late yesterday and overnight.) The starlings are watching the Downys eat from the feeder, but they have not attempted to jump on. I'm loving this feeder already! I expect the raccoons to appear when the weather warms up and will let you know how that goes. They come out at night to create their havoc, so I won't know if they've made an appearance unless something is disturbed. They wrestled my sandwich suet feeder out of the tree by tearing out the eye hook and that was the final straw! Thanks so much! FROM C. D., February 21 with picture: The woodpeckers love this feeder!
